Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)

Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) is a highly advanced blood test designed to assess the risk of certain genetic conditions in a developing fetus early in pregnancy. This safe and non-invasive procedure analyzes cell-free fetal DNA circulating in the mother’s bloodstream, providing valuable insights about the baby’s health without posing any risk to either the mother or the fetus.

This test is appropriate for all expectant parents who are 16 years or older and are between 10 weeks and full term of their pregnancy.

Key Features:

  • Early Detection: NIPT can be performed as early as 10 weeks into the pregnancy, allowing for early assessment of potential genetic conditions.
  • High Accuracy: This test is known for its high sensitivity and specificity in detecting common chromosomal abnormalities, such as Patau syndrome, Edwards syndrome, and Down syndrome.
  • Comprehensive Results: In addition to screening for chromosomal conditions, an Early Gender Detection test is complementary and can be included (if requested).
  • Non-Invasive: As a blood test, NIPT requires only a simple blood draw from the mother, eliminating the risks associated with invasive procedures like amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS).
  • Peace of Mind: By providing early and accurate information about the health of your baby, NIPT can help ease anxiety and support informed decision-making for expectant parents.

*This package consists of the basic NIPT blood test. However, it can be upgraded to the Standard, Advance and Pro Test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upgrade my pre-booked scan to a 4D/5D baby scan?

Yes, you can upgrade your pre-booked appointment to a 4D/5D baby scan at any time before your original scan is completed.

What will happen if I'm running late for my appointment.

Please contact us as soon as possible. We will do our best to accommodate you, but please note that you may have to wait, as our clinics are fully booked and any delays could significantly affect the appointments scheduled after yours.

What if the primary purpose of my appointment can't be complete?

Although we do our best to complete the scan on the same day, in some cases this may not be possible. This can happen if the baby is in a difficult position or due to factors such as excessive bowel gas, which can affect the clarity of the ultrasound image—especially in pregnancy-related scans. If this occurs, we will offer you a free rescan to ensure the main purpose of the scan is fulfilled. You can find details about the main purpose of your scan on the booking page for the scan you have selected or already booked.

Will you charge if I reschedule or cancel my appointment?

You will receive a full refund for your scan booking if you cancel or reschedule with at least 48 hours' notice. However, for same-day appointments, this notice period is reduced to 24 hours. Please review our cancellation and rescheduling policies in the Terms & Conditions, which are available on our website.

Can I book your service if I'm experiencing pain, vaginal bleeding, spotting or brown discharge?

Yes, you can book our services. However, please note that these scans are not a substitute for medical advice. We strongly recommend that any guests experiencing symptoms that may require urgent medical attention contact their GP or midwife immediately, or visit the nearest A&E as soon as possible, as these situations could be a medical emergency.

When will I get the results for my scan?

A comprehensive written report, along with relevant images, will be provided to you once your scan is completed.

What would happen if any abnormalities were identified.

If any abnormalities or pathologies are detected during the scan, our sonographer will provide advice in your report and inform your GP, midwife, or any other healthcare professional who referred you to Elite Community Ultrasound.

What will happen after my scan?

You will receive a written report along with relevant images. If our experienced sonographer identifies any concerns, they will discuss it with you, and if you'd like, we can send the report to your registered GP or midwife.

Are there any side effects associated with this scan?

No

What is the duration of the scan?

The duration of a scan typically lasts between 10 to 15 minutes, though it may take up to 20 minutes depending on factors such as the position and visibility of your unborn baby, as well as the complexity of the scan.

Will it be painful?

The ultrasound itself is painless, and you won’t feel anything except the sensor being gently applied to your skin. However, underlying issues, such as inflammation in the pelvic cavity, may cause some discomfort. Additionally, a transvaginal (internal) scan may cause slight discomfort due to the positioning of the probe.

Can I bring a relative or friend with me?

Yes, you can bring up to two companions. However, the number may vary for 4D/5D baby scans.

Is there any risk involved?

No, there are no known risks associated with this examination. However, certain factors or conditions, such as a high BMI or bowel gas, may affect the accuracy of the results.

Can my GP or health care provider refer me for a private pregnancy scan?

Simple answer: Yes. However, they must use the booking system of Elite Community Ultrasound. Alternatively, they can send us your "Clinical Detail Form" via the "Contact Us" page, and we will reach out to schedule the appointment.

Do I require a GP referral to book any private pregnancy scans?

The simple answer is no. However, a self-referral cannot replace proper medical advice from your healthcare professional. We always recommend contacting your relevant healthcare provider, such as your GP, midwife, or nurse, for any medical consultation.
