Prostate ultrasound is a non-invasive (except transrectal scan for the prostate in which a small probe (camera) is inserted into the rectum for having a closer look at the prostate) medical imaging to check the prostate inside your lower abdominal cavity. This includes bladder with the measurement of bladder volume before and after emptying, prostate, and seminal vesicles.

The prostate is an organ located beneath the urinary bladder. It is roughly the same size and shape as a walnut and increases in size as one ages. The prostate is located around the urinary bladder, which is a tube that transports urine from the bladder to the urinary bladder. The primary purpose of the prostate is to facilitate the production of seminal fluid, the liquid that carries sperm.

The most common issues of the prostate gland in a man can be enlarged prostate (BPH), inflammation in the prostate (prostatitis) and prostate cancer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I need an ultrasound of my Prostate?

  • If you are experiencing lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) that may include incomplete bladder emptying, terminal dribbling, a weak or irregular urinary stream, hesitation, urgency, regularity, incontinence.
  • Pain in bone, and erectile dysfunction.
  • Haematospermia (blood in the semen). Most hematospermia is just a mild, self-limiting condition, but sometimes it can be a sign of a bigger problem (like prostate cancer) and need to be looked at more closely.
  • If you are feeling lower abdominal pain.
  • If you are asymptomatic and above 50 years of age.
  • If the prostate cancer runs in your family.

What preparation do I need for a prostate scan?

You are required to have full bladder to get the best result. Therefore, you are required to drink two pints of water at least an hour before your scan appointment.

What kind of clothing do I need to wear for prostate scan?

There is no specific requirement of clothing for undergoing prostate scan. However, wearing loose and two-piece cloths are advisable.

What happens if I forgot to drink water or don’t have required full bladder at the time of scanning?

Your scan will still be attempted, however may interfere with the results of the test.

What happens during the prostate scan.

You will be asked to lie down on the scan couch(bed) comfortably. Our well qualified experienced specialist ultrasound Practitioner/Sonographer or Consultant Radiologist will put water-based gel on your lower tummy. Thereafter, they examine all included organs by placing the transducer (camera) over the gel on your lower belly. After completing the first part they will direct you for emptying the bladder (for the wee) and will check the remaining amount of urine in your bladder.

What is the duration of the scan?

The duration of the scan is usually 10 – 15 minutes and sometimes can take up to 20 minutes depends on the visibility of organs and complexity of scan.
