Abdomen & Pelvic ultrasound is a non-invasive medical imaging to check the organs and structures inside your whole belly. This includes:

  • Liver
  • Gallbladder
  • Pancreas
  • Bile duct
  • Spleen
  • Kidneys

For women this also includes: abdominal aorta, uterus (womb) including cervix, ovaries, adnexa, and pouch of Douglas (POD)/cul-de-sac
For men this also includes: aorta, bladder, prostate, and seminal vesicles, and retroperitoneum

Abdomen & Pelvic ultrasound can be used to test for a variety of conditions such as:

  • Cancer or other serious illnesses in the main solid organs such as liver, kidneys, spleen, or pancreas, uterus, and ovaries.
  • Gallstones and gallbladder polyp, bile duct stones and kidney stones.
  • Tumours, cysts, fluid.
  • Suspected liver disease such as fatty liver, liver cirrhosis. Furthermore, enlarged liver and spleen (Hepatomegaly and Splenomegaly).
  • Liver and pancreas assessment in patients with Diabetes.
  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm if you are at risk for an abdominal aortic aneurysm such as family history of Aortic Aneurysm.
  • Fibroids (Benign Tumour) in the uterus (womb), ovarian and/or adnexal cysts, fluid.
  • Suspected polyps in endometrial cavity and cervical canal.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
  • Anomalies in uterus.
  • Suspected polycystic ovaries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I need an ultrasound of my full abdomen?

  • If you experience the most common symptoms such as bloating, unintentional weight loss, abdominal distension etc.
  • If you are experiencing a combination of most common symptoms from below given list A & B.

List A: Upper and/or central abdominal pain, nausea & vomiting, jaundice, abnormal liver or kidney function tests, anaemia, and upper abdominal bloating.

List B: Lower abdominal pain, lower urinary tract symptoms such as difficulty in passing urine, urine incontinence, swelling in legs which can be caused by a mass compressing veins in lower abdominal cavity, and lower abdominal bloating.

Full abdominal ultrasound can be used to test for a variety of conditions such as:

  • Cancer or other serious illnesses in the main solid organs such as liver, kidneys, spleen, or pancreas, bladder, and prostate.
  • Gallstones and gallbladder polyp, bile duct stones and kidney stones.
  • Tumours, cysts, fluid.
  • Suspected liver disease such as fatty liver, liver cirrhosis. Furthermore, enlarged liver and spleen (Hepatomegaly and Splenomegaly).

What preparation do I need for upper abdominal scan?

You are required to have at least 06 hours fasting and to drink two pints of water at least an hour before your scan appointment for obtaining an adequate result.

What kind of clothing do I need to wear for this scan?

There is no specific requirement of clothing for undergoing this scan. However, wearing loose and two-piece cloths are advisable.

What happens if I have eaten before the appointment?

Your scan will still be attempted, however may interfere with the results of the test.

What happens if I forgot to drink water or don’t have required full bladder at the time of scanning?

Your scan will still be attempted, however may interfere with the results of the test.

What happens during the full abdominal scan.

You will be asked to lie down on the scan couch(bed) comfortably. Our well qualified experienced specialist ultrasound Practitioner/Sonographer or Consultant Radiologist will put water-based gel on your whole tummy. Thereafter, they examine all included organs by placing the transducer (camera) over the gel on your whole belly.

What is the duration of the scan?

The duration of the scan is usually 20 – 30 minutes and sometimes can take up to 40 minutes depends on the visibility of organs and complexity of scan.
