Elite Community Ultrasound (ECU) is delighted to offer this comprehensive scan or full series of scans for women who are 18years or above and are undergoing for fertility.
This scan includes the detailed examination of your ovaries to check the size and number of follicles (a small, fluid-filled sac in the ovary that contains an immature egg) and monitor the development of these follicles, mainly the dominant (largest) follicle during the fertility treatment. Apart from this, the assessment for the endometrial (womb lining) development is also included.
This scan can also be used while you are receiving IVF treatment.
A detailed specific and targeted assessment of ovarian follicles and endometrium (womb lining) would be carried out by our specialist/consultant sonographer by performing two methods: transabdominal (through the tummy) and preferably transvaginal/internal (through the vagina).
The follicular study is a series of scans monitoring the development of a dominant follicle which starts from day 10 of your menstrual Cycle (Day 1 is the first day of your period) and will continue until the ovulation.
The process of ovulation usually happens between the 13th and 17th day of your menstrual cycle (Day 1 is the first day of your period), but sometimes it can be postponed.
The size of maturing follicle usually becomes around 16mm on day 10 of your menstrual cycle however follicles of size between 18mm and 25mm are favourable for conceiving.
Reasons for Follicular tracking/study scans:
For more information regarding this scan please read the under-mentioned FAQs.
You are required to have full bladder to get an adequate result for transabdominal method of this scan if you refuse to have transvaginal (internal scan) which does not require to have full bladder. Therefore, you are required to drink two pints of water at least an hour before your scan appointment.
Your scan will still be attempted and will be completed by the second (preferable) method transvaginal/internal scan (is a type of medical imaging technique that uses a small ultrasound probe in the vagina to get a more detailed look at the organs inside the pelvic area.) that doesn’t require to have full bladder.
There is no specific requirement of clothing for undergoing this scan. However, wearing loose and two-piece cloths are advisable.
You will be asked to lie down on the scan couch(bed) comfortably. Our well qualified experienced consultant/specialist ultrasound Practitioner/Sonographer put water-based gel on your lower tummy. Thereafter, they examine all included organs by placing the transducer (camera) over the gel on your lower belly. However, the transvaginal (internal) scan will be discussed with you and cannot be proceeded without your consent.
The duration of the scan is usually 10 – 15 minutes and sometimes can take up to 20 minutes depends on the visibility of organs and complexity of scan.
